We recently conducted a special workshop on “Risk Management Training” tailored for international engineering students. This program aimed to deliver essential safety and health knowledge required for Japan’s industrial workplaces in an easy-to-understand format in English. To ensure participants could deepen their practical learning with confidence, the content was specifically designed to accommodate the needs of international students.

Participant Profile

The workshop attracted 22 international university students, with the following backgrounds:

• Countries of Origin:
  Students from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), Malaysia.
• Fields of Study:
  Primarily engineering disciplines such as electrical engineering and robotics, where knowledge of safety and health is integral to career development.
• English Proficiency:
  While English served as the common language, some students were also beginners in Japanese. The workshop prioritized concise and visual explanations to facilitate comprehension of technical terms and concepts.
• Motivations:
  Many participants expressed a strong desire to understand Japan’s safety standards and workplace culture. Several were preparing for internships or employment opportunities in Japanese companies.

Bringing together such a diverse group of students to share knowledge about Japan’s safety and health standards proved highly meaningful.

Workshop Highlights

Basics of Japan’s Safety and Health Standards
Participants engaged in group activities to learn about Japan’s labor safety guidelines and factory rules. Practical examples were incorporated to equip students with knowledge they can apply in real-world scenarios.

Hands-on Safety Practices:

• Creating KYT (Hazard Prediction) Sheets
• 5S Activities
• Risk Assessment Exercises

Cross-Cultural Communication in Safety:
Recognizing the importance of teamwork across language and cultural barriers, the workshop introduced basic Japanese phrases alongside strategies to foster effective communication.

Student Feedback

The international students provided overwhelmingly positive feedback:

• “I learned the importance of safety and now have a clearer image of what it’s like to work in Japan!”
• “The English explanations made the content very accessible.”
• “It was great to experience the specific steps of safety procedures firsthand.”

These reactions reaffirmed the value of creating a practical and inclusive learning experience.

Looking Ahead

Through workshops like this, we aim to provide international students with a safe and supportive environment to learn and work in Japan. As part of the ASCA TECH LAB initiative, we also plan to expand opportunities for cultural exchange between Japanese companies and international students, promoting diversity and inclusion in learning and professional settings.

We hope this program serves as a stepping stone for participants to enhance their safety awareness and gain practical knowledge for their future careers in Japan!
